ALL BLACKS INCONSISTENT OVER MEALAMU APPEAL

The New Zealand All Blacks do not lose very often - and that is probably why they struggle to accept defeat when it happens.

Their response to the four-week ban handed out to All Blacks Test hooker Keven Mealamu this week has been little short of a disgrace.

Mealamu is currently suspended for four weeks after being cited and found guilty of striking England captain Lewis Moody with his head during last Saturday's clash at Twickenham.

Because of his previous good character, disciplinary chief Professor Lorne Crerar effectively halved Mealamu's ban. It might have been eight weeks, but he got four.

New Zealand though, will appeal against the decision and have even named Mealamu in their team for Saturday's appointment with Scotland, which could be viewed by some as a provocative gesture.

"We are defending a guy whose character has been questioned and it shouldn't be," said All Blacks assistant coach Steve Hansen.

Before he got the first with 15 minutes to go for his seventh try in nine tests, the score was 34-10.

"The game was done and dusted by then" the St George Illawarra winger said.

"They were consolation tries, I suppose. If they had happened at the start we would have got more confidence from them, but they came at the end of the game and I don't think you can take too much out of that."

While the Kiwis were hurting immediately after the defeat, Nightingale said he and his team-mates had been able to move on.

As National Rugby League players, they were familiar to dealing with losses and backing up the following weekend.

"We picked ourselves off the carpet and we have the opportunity to redeem ourselves this weekend and rectify our mistakes," he said.

"A lot of teams don't get to do that. We're lucky enough that we put ourselves in the position in the competition that we can."

If Kiwis do get past the Kangaroos at Suncorp Stadium, it will put the exclamation mark on a notable year for Nightingale.

The 24-year-old, along with test team-mates Nathan Fien and Jeremy Smith, was part of the Dragons' grand final triumph last month, scoring two tries in the 32-8 win over the Sydney Roosters.

"You couldn't ask for much more than winning both competitions you've been involved in," he said.

"It would top a perfect year."
