The Maroons have painted themselves as underdogs and former State of Origin greats believe that may just be the case for tonight’s series opener as driving rain lashes Sydney’s ANZ Stadium.
With New South Wales having already promised to rock their opponents into submission, the miserable weather looks set to play right into their hands, with South Sydney coach and former Queensland hooker John Lang worried it will nullify the Maroons’ brilliant backline.
“It will be marginally better for NSW,” Lang said. “NSW have plenty of good attacking backs too but Queensland probably has a bit more brilliance.
“Across the backline they’ve got a bit more to offer and like to use the ball a bit more too.
“That’s why I say it will marginally suit NSW.”
Gold Coast coach and former Blues back-rower John Cartwright, who played eight games for NSW between 1989 and 1992, agreed that it could be a quiet night for Maroons stars Greg Inglis, Billy Slater and Israel Folau.
“The try-scorers aren’t going to get many opportunities to show their wares,” he said. “It’s a lot harder to get quality ball to your outside men when conditions are going to be what they are.
“Kicking games, tries off kicks, scrambling defence – they’re the qualities that are going to count tonight.”
However, while Queensland would otherwise have been most people’s realistic favourites after four consecutive series wins, Cartwright said it was almost impossible to pick a clear favourite in the wet conditions.
“There are definitely no favourites now – it’s split right down the middle,” he said. “It will be the side that adapts better to the conditions, and it’s hard to say who that is going to be.

“Errors are going to happen and it’s important that both sides accept that. Although you don’t want to be constantly turning the ball over, it’s not as crucial.
“If you’re turning the ball over in dry weather you’re asking for trouble. But in wet weather you have to accept that it’s going to happen and you need to be prepared to defend – it’s just not as hard to defend in the wet as it is in the dry.”
Of course, there won’t be any repeat of Greg Dowling’s famous 1984 try in the SCG mud.
Despite the rain and an ANZ Stadium surface that hasn’t always received favourable reviews, Lang said he still expected to see plenty of skill on display.
“It doesn’t make as big a difference today as it used to,” he said. “The water soaks through [the surface] these days and it doesn’t affect the game greatly with the balls they use now.
“Brett Kimmorley certainly would have been the master of wet weather football in the old days.
“I still think it favours NSW a little bit but not to any great extent.”
Former Maroons five-eighth Ben Ikin, who made his debut as a virtual unknown in 1995 and promptly helped Queensland to an upset 3-0 series win, said it was impossible to pick a winner in the wet.
“I’ve gone through all of the positions, and who can do what in which situation, and I just don’t see any clear favourite,” he said.
“Both sides would have had their plans for dry weather and wet weather and they’ll just slip into what’s required.
“I don’t think it will matter at all to a Darren Lockyer or Petero Civoniceva.”
It’s been a long time between drinks, so to speak, with the last seriously rain-affected Origin clash way back in Game Two of the 2003 series, when Andrew Johns led NSW to a 27-4 win.
However, there have been some classic encounters in the wet over the years.
Ironically, Origin’s fastest ever try was scored in atrocious conditions at ANZ Stadium (then known as Telstra Stadium) in 1999 when NSW fullback Robbie Ross crossed after just 42 seconds.
The Blues won 12-8 after a scoreless second half.
And who could ever forget Michael O’Conner’s sideline conversion with only minutes remaining to give NSW a 14-12 win in Game Two of the 1991 series?
Tonight’s clash could well produce another memorable Origin moment, but Queensland assistant coach Michael Hagan said his side was well prepared for what lay ahead.
“The important thing is that we’re patient in completing our sets,” he said.
“We didn’t do that well in Game Three last year but we’re aware of that and it’s something we’ve worked hard on.
“But the fact is that there are going to be some errors in the game so it comes down to how you defend your errors.
“That’s Origin all the time. It’s how you react to things and with conditions as they are tonight it’s probably a little bit exaggerated.”

Plymouth Albion chairman of rugby Graham Dawe says Exeter can win their play-off final if they manage to turn Bristol's crowd against their team.
The Chiefs beat Bristol 9-6 in the first leg of the Championship final at Sandy Park last Wednesday.
He told BBC Spotlight: "Exeter have got to try and play with some tempo and they need a little bit of luck.
"They need to get the Bristol crowd upset with their own team, and then they might sneak a win."
Dawe added: "It's in Exeter's hands, they're going into the game in the lead and by good fortune they could spend the next 12 months in the Premiership."
With only three points separating the two sides ahead of Wednesday's second leg, former England international Dawe believes whichever side can hold their nerve and convert their chances will be celebrating after 80 minutes.
He said: "All the signs are that Bristol at home will win the game, but they didn't do enough to try and beat Exeter at Sandy Park, they were just content to stay in touch and that might come back to bite them.
"If Exeter get a penalty and a try early on, then suddenly it's 13-0.
"I think a few of Bristol's supporters would get fidgety and you don't know how people react under pressure."
Dawe, who is Plymouth Albion's chairman of rugby, said that if the Chiefs were to win promotion to the Premiership, the benefits would be felt right across the region.
He said: "The south west has been crying out for a Premiership team for a long time and I think the RFU want a Premiership team down here and we'll just have to wait and see.
"Exeter have made their investment, they've recruited well and they've got a good team.
"Whether it's good enough to get them into the Premiership, only time will tell, but it'll go down in history as a great year and a great campaign for them," added Dawe.

Bristol captain Jason Spice says their Championship win at Exeter in December gives them confidence going into the first leg of the play-off final.
Paul Hull's men take on the Chiefs at Sandy Park on Wednesday in a much- anticipated West Country derby.
Spice told BBC Bristol: "We know we can go down there and win, and win well, so hopefully we can replicate that.
"The success we had is going to help us and help the younger guys but it's going to be a little more intense."
Spice continued: "Their pack is pretty strong and gave us a fair hammering the first time [at the Memorial Stadium] but we turned the tide second time round."
And after what has been a long season the 35-year-old says the players are not getting too carried away with the occasion.
"The guys feet are on the ground and there's not too many who think we're in the Premiership already which is important as we've got two tough games ahead of us, " he said.
"The training's been a little bit lighter than we'd expected at this stage but we're pretty well versed on how we want to play the game.
"It's just a question of fine-tuning things as there's no real need to start banging heads against the wall."
After a slow start to their season Bristol hit a rich vein of form winning 13 successive Championship games coming into the play-offs.
They then managed to finish top of their pool and with the highest overall points total which allows them to have the second-leg of the final back at the Memorial Stadium.
The aggregate score of the two legs will determine whether it is Bristol or Exeter who are promoted on May 26, subject to RFU approval.
Both matches are expected to be played in front of record crowds.

State of Origin 2010
As a staunch Queensland supporter, I'd just like to send out a big thank you to Bob McCarthy, Laurie Daley, Bob Fulton and Geoff Gerard - yep that's right, the NSW selection panel.
Without the contribution of those four individuals, I don't think the Maroons would be in the position of chasing their fifth series win in succession.
Most rugby league fans, who know a thing or two about the game, would realise that the selectors from south of my border have come up with some bizarre decisions over the past four years.
I won't go into past deeds but whenever NSW announce their team, I respond in two ways. Initially I have a chuckle to myself and then I just sit there and scratch my head. It frustrates me - Blues' supporters must be at the point of hitting their heads against a wall (maybe those repeated blows to the noggin' explain the lack of intelligence below the Tweed).
But looking past my poor attempt at banter, NSW have made some seriously big bloopers again this year.
Firstly, where on Earth is Paul Gallen? The man with the best workrate of any forward in the NRL and the man who, only a few weeks ago, was chosen as one of the top three Australian backrowers.
This is akin to shifting deck chairs on the Titanic - the last thing you want to be during the heat of the Origin battle is switching players in playmaking positions. For starters, Ennis is an 80 minute player and NSW have tried Gidley in spurts at dummy half in the past - he failed miserably. They obviously haven't learnt. Origin isn't about the flashy plays, it comes down hard work and determination when the game is in the balance.
Thirdly, because of Idris' selection, NSW are one forward short. Having played in the backrow, halves and outside backs, Panthers' stalwart Luke Lewis is the perfect utility negating the need for a back on the bench.
However, despite saying all that, Origin isn't won on paper. And the beauty of Origin is even when you think you have it figured out, it always comes up with a surprise or two.
As much as they would like to, the Maroons definitely can't claim their favoured underdog status this season and question marks do hang over the fitness of Cameron Smith and Johnathan Thurston.
However, the Blues' State of Origin side as it stands at the moment doesn't really strike any fear into my maroon heart.
Once again, thanks to McCarthy and co's "best" efforts, the biggest hurdle Queensland will face in 2010 is not the opposition itself but a complacent mindset.
It's Queensland series to lose and if we play to potential, half a decade of dominance will be ours!
